Weekend in Norfolk scheduled for Friday, August 5, Saturday, August 6, and Sunday, August 7 is always updating its exciting roster of free events and things to do from old favorites like water soccer and art openings, to tours of tiffany windows, great music, and hiking the trails. Every year WIN offers several new events where visitors and residents alike can soak up the fun at their own pace!

Attend a Grand Opening

On Saturday, August 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. WIN attendees are invited to the Grand Opening of the Connecticut-Asia Center located at 207A Westside Road. Be one of the first to explore the roots of spiritual thought that have influenced the world by exploring three floors of Eastern religious culture. Each floor represents one religion. Floor one is dedicated to Taoist culture, floor two is dedicated to Confucian culture and floor three is dedicated to Buddhism. A highlight of each floor is the engaging and interactive displays that allow visitors to immerse themselves in the core tenets of each culture.  There will also be tours offered on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Kid’s Day @ the Farmers Market 

It’s Kid’s Day at this year’s Farmers Market, one of the most popular in Connecticut. The organizers of the Farmers Market have organized something really special for kids! While parents admire beautiful artisan wares, watch cooking demonstrations and shop for the freshest heirloom fruits and vegetables, kids will be entertained with various games and activities. The fun is free and engaging, there is free face painting, a giant bubble-blowing contest… plus a challenging scavenger hunt, candy jar guess, and, a traditional corn hole toss. Best of all, if your kids work up an appetite there are free hot dogs and sodas for kids – all courtesy of a coupon from the Norfolk Farmers Market! To add to the merriment, Andy Styles is the musician of the day.

Saturday Night is Family Fun and Movie Night 

Saturday Night from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. is Family Fun Night with an outdoor Movie at the Botelle School. There will be plenty of good old-fashioned fun at this special event which is the perfect way to bond on a Saturday night. Kids will enjoy a giant bounce house, plus food, drinks, candy, snacks, and goodies for sale. The movie will begin at dusk and will play on the blow-up projector screen at dusk. A modest fee helps to defray the cost of the event.

Calling all treasure hunters to the town-wide tag sale scheduled for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sleuths and bargain hunters can pick up a map at the Hub at 2 Station Place and then head out to find some awesome stuff! In an age where thrift shops are getting pricier and pricier, this town-wide tag sale is a great option to save some money and have fun doing it. This is no ordinary tag sale- multi-family and estate sales will offer just about everything imaginable. Best of all, it is a great opportunity to meet some of the nicest people on the planet, the residents of Norfolk, Connecticut, so don't forget to introduce yourself.

Stained Glass Window Tours @ 2022 Weekend In Norfolk

Norfolk, Connecticut is home to some remarkable stained glass windows, ranging from works of art created in the United States to those commissioned and created in Germany.  It is thought that the art of stained glass originated in the Middle East.  The use of stained glass spread to the United States from France and England where the colored glass was used in religious buildings as early as the 7th century.

Stained glass lovers, rejoice! Three of Norfolk’s churches, the Immaculate Conception Church, the Battell Chapel, and the Summer Chapel at the Church of the Transfiguration will be open at various times during the Weekend in Norfolk, a townwide celebration taking place on Friday, August 5, Saturday, August 6, and Sunday, August 7. There will be a walking tour of the three churches available online and at the hub.

Stained Glass Tours of the Immaculate Conception Church, located on 4 North Street will be offered on Friday, August 5 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday, August 7 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Tours of the stained glass windows at the Battell Chapel located on 12 Litchfield Road will take place on Friday, August 5 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. and on Sunday, August 7 from 12 noon to 3 p.m.

Tiffany Stained Glass Windows @ Battell Chapel

The Battell Chapel, part of the Church of Christ Congregational Church has stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and Maitland Armstrong. The Tiffany windows, located in a curved wall, depict the four seasons, two on either side of a woodland stream scene.  The windows were given in memory of Joseph and Sarah Battell Stoeckel in 1888 by their daughter. At the west end of the chapel are stained glass windows made from opalescent glass designed by D. Maitland Armstrong. Opalescent glass is known for creating a great depth of field and a beautiful shimmering effect when the sun hits it.

The Church of Immaculate Conception is a wood-framed church finished in stucco and covered in a cross-gabled roof. Alterations of the original church were completed in 1925 by Alfredo S.G. Taylor and typify his work with a somewhat Spanish Revival appearance.  The Immaculate Conception Church has stained glass windows created by Franz Meyer & Co. of Munich, Germany. The windows were shipped to Norfolk from the factory in the mid-1920s.

Nestled in the woods of Norfolk, the summer Chapel of the Church of the Transfiguration is a simple brown shingled-style church with magnificent stained glass windows that are known locally as the "chapel of ease."  Inside this wood-paneled chapel, which has a wood-beamed ceiling, the stained glass windows gleam. Early members of this chapel included heirs of the Lord and Taylor Department Store, a physicist on the Manhattan Project, and many New Yorkers that spent their summer in Norfolk. The most prominent members included Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, and his wife Olivia, and their family. A window near the front of the chapel is dedicated to the memory of Olivia from her daughter Clara.

In-Person or Zoom-In @ Weekend in Norfolk

The little village of Norfolk, Connecticut has organized Winter Weekend in Norfolk, consisting of a series of in-person and Zoom events taking place on Saturday, February 26 through Sunday, February 27 that are sure to chase the winter blues away.

If your kids are bored and like sports, take them skating at the Norfolk Skating Rink on Mountain Road where kids can warm up next to a roaring bonfire while enjoying steaming hot chocolate and s'mores on Saturday afternoon. A highlight at the rink will be a demonstration of an ancient Scottish game, curling,  by the Norfolk Curling Club. Best of all, visitors are welcome to try their hand at learning this skill with experts.

Norfolk is an art lover's dream that comes alive during the Winter Weekend in Norfolk. Visitors will have the chance to tour Tiffany Stained Glass Windows at the Battell Chapel as well as windows designed by one of the most prestigious firms named by Pope Leo XII as a Pontifical Institute of Christian Art at the Immaculate Conception Church. Other stops for art lovers are the Norfolk Libary that is hosting "Hidden Doorways," photographs by Angus Mudge, and a photography display, "In the Woods," of Norfolk's Land Trust Properties at The Hub @ 2 Station Place where maps and event information is also available.

To experience the natural beauty of Norfolk's great outdoors, don't miss the Wildlife Walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday or the Photography Safari beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. Both of these in-person outdoor events will lead you through some of Norfolk's unspoiled scenery that it is famous for.

If you can't make it to town, no worries, the Winter WIN organizers have that covered with a series of fascinating programs. If you like to cook don't miss the cooking demonstration with Martiña Gago, which will transport you to sunny Spain, where the culinary culture is as rich and varied as the country itself. Learn how ski jumping became popular in the area and how and why it changed in the 1980s.

Winter WIN is one of Connecticut's most beloved winter traditions. The entire town of Norfolk has rolled out a "winter white carpet" for in-person and virtual events. This is the best way to warm up to winter!

Weekend in Norfolk is taking place once again this winter from Saturday, February 26 through Sunday, February, 27th. In addition to many exciting live in-person events that range from curling demonstrations, a photography safari, wildlife walks, photography and art shows, and tours of magnificent stained glass windows, there are also several interesting Zoom programs being offered.

If you like to cook don't miss the cooking demonstration with Martiña Gago, which will transport you to sunny Spain, where the culinary culture is as rich and varied as the country itself. Paella, Spain's National dish is on the menu today. Many believe that this dish was prepared by a gentleman courting his fiancee because of the corruption of the word,  "para ella" which can be interpreted as meaning "for her."  During this demonstration, Martiña will talk about the history of the dish and give you a step-by-step demonstration on how to make the most iconic dish of Spain. This demo is free and will be on-demand.

If you enjoy historic architecture, don't miss the program. Ladies, Legends, & Lakeside Dwellings - Alfredo Taylor in Norfolk presented by Ann Havemeyer and the Norfolk Library on Saturday, February 26 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Alfredo Taylor arrived in Norfolk in 1902 at the time when Norfolk was being transformed into the beautiful village that it is today. Learn the many ways that Taylor added to this movement of transformation that town residents and visitors still enjoy, untouched today. One of his greatest contributions was the creation of the Norfolk Green, one of the most classic and unspoiled in New England. For sports-minded historians, the Norfolk Historical Society has teamed up with author and coach, Ariel Picton Kobayashi on Sunday, February 27 at 4 p.m. This Zoom talk will highlight the popularity of ski jumping across the northeast that was introduced by Norwegian immigrants. Learn how ski jumping became popular in the area and how and why it changed in the 1980s. Today, only a handful of ski towers remain including the one in nearby Salisbury. In February 2022 - Warm Up To Winter @ Weekend in Norfolk

Considering the recent cold temperatures, 2022 is the perfect time to warm up to winter at Weekend in Norfolk, Connecticut on Saturday, February 26, and Sunday, February 27. This town-wide festival is featuring both in-person and virtual events that highlight the many treasures that this bucolic village in the heart of northwest Connecticut has to offer. 

Known for its scenic beauty, pure mountain air, and fresh spring water, Norwalk has been considered a summer resort since the 1870s and still retains this charming ambiance today. Winter in Norfolk is a very special season that exudes an old-fashioned New England appeal that can be experienced in many of the in-person events planned for this year's Winter WIN. Best of all, every event has been carefully curated and most are free of charge. 

To get a taste of Norfolk's great outdoors, take a walk on the wild side with John Anderson, a member of Norfolk's Conservation Committee, on Saturday, February 26 at 10 a.m. Find out how animals survive in the winter, look for interesting tracks, and learn how to spot porcupine dens. Hikers should meet at the Hub @ 2 Station Place in the center of town. Afterward, you can explore one of Norfolk’s many trails that are perfect for cross-country skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing. 

If you want to sharpen your photography skills, don’t miss the winter photography walk with Doug McDevitt on Sunday, February 27. Participants should meet at the Hub (2 Station Place) at 10 a.m. where there is a photo exhibit of Norfolk’s Land Trusts that is sure to get you in the mood! After a brief introduction participants will head out to the Mountain Road area to shoot some of Norfolk’s most scenic landscapes. Afterward, folks might want to head to the Norfolk Library and its photo exhibition featuring the work of Angus Mudge. 

For art lovers, there is the option to take a self-guided tour of the magnificent Tiffany stained glass windows at the Immaculate Conception Church and the Battell Chapel. 

The extraordinary stained glass windows by Tiffany at the Battell Chapel depict the four seasons, the center window shows a brilliant sunrise, and to its left, is spring and summer and to the right, is autumn and winter. In addition, there are three large stained glass windows designed by D. Maitland Armstrong of opalescent glass using a special layer technique that creates a great depth of field and a shimmering effect, especially on a sunny day. The Battel Chapel will be open both days from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; masks must be worn and social distancing observed. 

The Immaculate Conception Church will be open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday, after mass, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. Here visitors can view ten exquisite stained-glass windows designed by architect Alfredo Taylor and created by Franz Mayer & Company of Munich, Germany. At the time, this company was awarded the status of "Royal Bavarian Art Establishment by King Ludwig II and was named by Pope Leo XIII as a "Pontifical Institute of Christian Art." Today the company is managed by the fifth generation of family members and work with renowned artists around the world. 

Another stop for art lovers is the Norfolk Library where visitors will be greeted by a sculpted owl that adorns the front porch and a children's creative art display that celebrates this beautiful library. An opening of this display with special treats will take place on Saturday, February 26 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. 

The Norfolk Library is also hosting two fascinating virtual programs. The first, "Ladies, Legends, and Lakeside Dwellings," is perfect for lovers of architectural history. Many of the homes lining the winding roads of Norfolk bear the signature of Alfredo Taylor, a Beaux-Arts architect whose work has come to define the look and style of much of this lovely town. Library Director and local historian, author, and Yale University graduate, Ann Havemeyer will present an illustrated talk on Taylor and his Norfolk works on Sunday, February 27 at 4 p.m.

Did you know that Norfolk once had an active ski jump? To celebrate that tidbit from the past, the Norfolk Historical Society will present a virtual program on Sunday, February 27 at 4 p.m. on Ski Jumping in the Northeast, featuring a talk by Ariel Picton Kobayashi, author, and ski coach. With the U.S. National Junior Ski Jumping Championships concluding in Salisbury, Connecticut on February 26, the timing for this fascinating look at the many ski towers that once dotted the landscape across the northeastern United States is especially meaningful.

If you are interested in Spanish cuisine, don’t miss the online cooking demonstration with Martiña Gago who will show you the step-by-step process of how to make authentic paella.

If you like unusual sports, don’t miss Saturday's, demonstration by the Norfolk Curling Club at the skating rink by the town baseball field on Mountain Road. The public is invited to participate in this ancient Scottish sport. The curling club event is being held in conjunction with the Fire Department’s bonfire and skating event at the rink. After having fun on the ice, warm up next to a bonfire with hot chocolate from the Curling Club and s’mores prepared by the Fire Department.

This year get ready to experience Winter Weekend in Norfolk on Saturday 26 and Sunday, February 27. The Committee is putting the finishing touches on a number of exciting in-person and virtual events for folks near and far to enjoy whether right here in town or from the comfort of their living room. 

As you know, since the first weekend of August 2016, the town of Norfolk, Conn., has been welcoming visitors to its annual Weekend in Norfolk (WIN)—in-person, town-wide summer festivals featuring three days of concerts, art shows, kids’ events, games, workshops, open houses and tours, most of them free. 

Four years ago, Norfolk added a two-day mid-February festival celebrating and showcasing its winter charms.  This year there will be plenty of action including virtual tours and talks, in-person viewings, music, and art shows. In-person events include viewing Tiffany Stained Glass Windows @ the Battell Chapel, a Mushroom workshop @ Husky Meadows Farm, Ice Skating & bonfire for kids, authors talk about Ski Jumping in the Litchfield Hills, and much more.
